Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 November 2026
Vyn is an app that keeps track of your car's maintenance. This policy explains what the app does with your information.
The short version
- Your cars, service log, receipts and photos stay on your iPhone and in your own iCloud account. We can't see them.
- Vyn has no accounts, no ads and no tracking.
- A few features send the minimum they need to answer you. Each is listed below.
What stays on your phone
Your cars' details (make, model, year, engine, VIN, mileage, power), service entries, receipts, notes, photos of your cars, odometer readings, your onboarding answers and your settings.
When iCloud is on for Vyn, this is stored in your private iCloud database so it syncs between your devices. Apple keeps it under your Apple Account. We have no access to it.
Photos and scans (VIN, odometer, receipts, workshop quotes) are read on your phone with Apple's on-device text recognition and image tools. Cutting your car out of a photo also happens on your phone. These images aren't uploaded.
What leaves your phone
- VIN lookup. When you scan or type a VIN, Vyn sends only the VIN to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's public vehicle database (vPIC) to fill in your car's details. NHTSA's privacy policy covers that request.
- Recalls. To list recalls, Vyn sends your car's make, model and year (not the VIN) to NHTSA's public recall database.
- Known issues. To list problems commonly reported for your car, Vyn sends its make, model, year and engine to Vyn's server, which asks Claude, an AI made by Anthropic. The answer is kept per car type and shared by everyone with the same car.
- Ask Vyn, only after you agree to it in the app. Your question, your recent messages in that chat and a summary of your car (make, model, year, engine, mileage, service history and what's due) go to Vyn's server, which passes them to Claude to write the answer. The summary never includes your VIN, your photos or your name. Vyn's server doesn't store your questions or the answers; it keeps only a count of how many questions you've asked, to apply the monthly limit. Anthropic handles them under its commercial terms and doesn't use them to train its models.
- Quote Check. The quote is read on your phone; only the text read from it and the summary of your car go to Vyn's server and Claude to judge each line. The photo never leaves your phone, and the text isn't stored after the answer.
- Purchases. Vyn Pro is sold by Apple. Vyn uses RevenueCat, a subscription service, to check whether your subscription is active: your App Store purchase records and a random ID made for this app go to RevenueCat, never your name, email or Apple Account. Vyn's server uses the same random ID to check Pro and count questions. RevenueCat's privacy policy covers what it keeps. We never see your payment details.
Reminders and the weekly check-in are scheduled on your phone.
What we don't do
- No advertising, and no selling or sharing your information for advertising.
- No tracking across other companies' apps or websites.
- No analytics or third-party tracking code in the app.
Deleting your information
Delete a car or a service in the app and it's removed from your phone and your iCloud. Deleting the app removes what's on your phone; to remove the iCloud copy too, go to Settings, then your name, then iCloud, then Manage Storage, then Vyn.
Children
Vyn isn't made for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be in the app and on our website, with a new date at the top.
